Album Review: Melodrama, Lorde

After much anticipation, Lorde released her sophomore album Melodrama on June 16th. If you thought Pure Heroine was pure genius, you need to check this out--after four years, this young artist has matured and sharpened her musical abilities.

The album starts and ends with two upbeat and dance-y songs: "Green Light" and "Perfect Places", both of which were released as singles. Sandwiched between these two songs are nine more songs stemming from Lorde's breakup from her long time boyfriend in 2015. In Melodrama, the typical cliches that come when talking about love and heartbreak aren't shown in a painfully overused way. Instead, they turn into a poetic representation of every emotion felt in this type of situation. These emotions come crystal clear in both lyrics and in Lorde's voice.

It's easy to listen to this album straight through because all the songs flow together seamlessly. "Sober" and "Liability" tie everything together;there is a reprise for both where themes and melodies are brought back.

It was well worth the wait for this quality album. I doubt the artistry will stop yet--Lorde is not even 21 yet, so there's still going to be more growth in her music. This is just the beginning, and I cannot wait to see what she'll be creating in the years to come.
