Album Review: Sacred Hearts Club, Foster the People

In great times of stress, art will blossom.

There is currently a lot of negativity in the world, specifically in America, where it feels like there is more hate than love. I cannot even go to the grocery store without hearing some negative comment, whether it be about someone's religion, sexuality, or race. Every week another issue will pop up on the news, and every week I feel more and more of a divide within the country I've lived in my entire life.

But as I said before, art flourishes in these times. Artists of all mediums are greatly needed to give people an escape from the norm and to spread hope and love. Foster the People's third album Sacred Hearts Club holds a message of love that is important to hear during these times.

It is not a perfect album. I feel like "I Love My Friends" and "Static Space Lover" feel sort of campy compared to the other tracks. "Loyal Like Sid and Nancy" seems out of place when it transitions from "Time to Get Closer" because they sound like two different genres. However, the lyricism and messages within the album make up for the cons.

Mark Foster released a statement shortly after the album was released, stating, "Hopefully [the album] makes you feel as it made us feel when we were working on it--that life is beautiful. And love will always be bigger than politics." I'd say this is a pretty accurate statement, seeing as living life and loving seem to be the two most prominent themes popping up within the album.

"Pay the Man", "I Love My Friends", and "Harden the Paint" are some songs that carry out the theme of love, whereas "III" and "SHC" focus more on living life and giving it meaning. "Lotus Eater" speaks of fighting against superficial things and trying to break out of the cycle of partying. "Doing It for the Money" talks of staying true to yourself and standing up for what you believe in--another important message to hear nowadays.

If you're in need of some positive lyrics and funky beats, this album is for you. Share it with your friends and as always, spread the love.
